"It doesn't matter that we are disabled. When we fall hard, we just get back up again. Man, fuck the world and its ableism."
-anonymous para athlete
Tangled Outriggers compiles, creates, edits, and distributes disabled, adaptive, and Paralympic Snowsports content aiming to unmask the stigma of disability within the global Snowsports and athletic communities.
Wouldn’t you like to know? All that matters is that Tangled Outriggers is run by members of the disabled, adaptive, and Paralympic Snowsports community. Tangled Outriggers currently has an anonymous creator and admin. Our page strives to provide comfort, humor, and inspire all disabled and able-bodied viewers alike. Equality is the goal and feedback of all sorts is always welcome. We accept direct messages, emails, comments, and suggestions of all forms to help progress what it means to be a part of and represent our community and lifestyle. Help us help our community to become more recognized in the “real world” of sports!
Wikipedia states that outriggers are: “skis that are used by para-skiers to assist with balance, turn, control their speed, stop and amplify the direction of turns….When falling, skiers are taught to move their arms to prevent falling on the outrigger and injuring themselves.” While we advocate for the use of adaptive equipment, Tangled Outriggers understands that not all disabilities are visible or ‘socially’ understood. No matter the equipment, being a disabled athlete means that we already know what it means to fall, what it means to injure ourselves, what it means to be 'different'. Tangled Outriggers aims to promote and contribute to the exposure and development of sports for all persons living with impairments by showing how hard we fall, fail, and crash. In doing so, we are showing just how difficult our sports are. We hope that this raises awareness of our sports and our careers to help bring more social and financial support to Paralympic, adaptive, and disabled Snowsports athletes and sports all around the world.
Some may find it difficult to see humor in disabled people falling or failing but don't worry, you are allowed to laugh (we know that we do). By showing how hard we fall, we are showing just how difficult our sports are. We hope that this raises awareness of our sports and careers to help bring more social and financial support to Paralympic Snowsports athletes all around the world. The more unique we look coming down the hill, the more unique we will fall. We are just people, so don’t worry about feeling bad for laughing at a disabled person, you’re allowed to laugh, we are just like you! Check us out on Instagram, our primary social media outlet, and we promise you won’t regret it!
